Book - The Garden Guardians
From acclaimed international ‘Artomologist’ and insect expert Jane Davenport, comes The Garden Guardians – An award-winning book that helps you identify, look after and attract your very own Garden Guardians (otherwise known as beneficial insects). Remember….You’re not the only one hard at work in your backyard!
The Garden Guardians is over 130 pages of detailed information on beneficial insects and other wildlife. It contains more than 300 colour images of these fascinating creatures to help gardeners identify them. But don’t worry, it’s no boring textbook! Its written in a very easy to understand format and is perfect for all ages and garden skill levels.
Section One introduces the Garden Guardians and showcases over 20 different groups of insects. Included are ladybirds (of course), spiders, hoverflies, lacewings, predatory beetles and many many more.Learn how to identify the ‘good bugs’ and discover what they are doing for you. Attract thousands of tiny free workers to your garden and make it a healthier and more enjoyable place to be! There is also plenty of practical advice and tips on how to look after your Garden Guardians!
Section Two provides useful tips on how to look after the Garden Guardians and how to attract more into your garden.
Section Three gives you ideas on how to control pest problems using organic methods and our lovely Garden Guardians.
Section Four is the Bugliography! Its the quick reference section which puts the insects into their scientific classifications and provides details on some very nasty pests. It also lets you know where you can buy beneficial insects and where to go if you’re after more information on insects and organic gardening.
Section Five highlights recommended gardening products which don’t harm beneficial insects and are safe for use in organic gardening.
Jane Davenport was the insect expert for Burke’s Backyard for 5 years and fans of her informative, fun and casual column ‘Sects in the City will love this book.
We hope you enjoy meeting the Garden Guardians!

I got the Magic Wand s for my girls at the Royal Show last year (plus many other things!). We made started a fairy garden and now I am back for more…
Love the new website guys! I thought I already had at least one of everything already…but I see I need to add some things to my collection!
If an item from my Jane Davenport/Institute of Cute collection isn’t on the website – does that mean it is no longer available? Such as my mini ladybird vaccuum cleaner. Will you get more?
Most of our items are limited edition and highly collectible- once they are gone – that is it!
Here are some of the FANTASTIC thank yous and feedback comments the Institute of Cute has received in its first few weeks of life! (feel free to add you own!):
” Just wanted to say thank you for the lovely card and butterfly magnets that you placed inside my order parcel. It is so nice to receive such wonderful service by people who have a genuine desire to please their customers. Please pass on my appreciation to Erin and Angus… The magnets are just perfect.
Thanks again, Amy
(Amy was the Institute of Cutes first customer so she got a special pressie!)
“Thanks Jane for you prompt reply (again),
I found the new site fantastic – I loved looking at everything and it was
really easy to find what I wanted to look at.
The only suggestion I would have (and you mentioned it in your email) would
be to have the jewellery modelled on someone to give a better idea of how it
looks,
Can’t wait for my special parcel to arrive,
Love and ladybugs
Sue Combridge.”
“Thanks Jane, I can’t wait to wear the necklace either! The other things are for gifts, so I need to get it right – I would like the t-shirt to be black size 10 (do you think this is ok for a tallish 9yo girl?).
The website was really nice – I was in Byron a couple of weekends ago and didn’t have nearly enough time in your store so I was quite excited to be able to buy things online, especially with Christmas coming up! I was please to see new additions this morning when I was placing my order, different to two days ago. This will definitely see me bookmarking the site.
You are welcome to use any of my comments on your website as testimonial – I’ll definitely be back!

“Hi Jane,
Loved the new web site, and was very user friendly. Just wondering if you will have any 2010 ladybird diaries (like this years one)? I use mine daily and carry it around in my bag, I’d be lost without it!!
Also we are coming up to Queensland in April and have already told the boys that my sister in law (also names Lyn) and I have put your shop in Byron on our “to do list”!!! Not sure what day yet, but would love to meet you if happen to be in the shop that day!!
I have just brought a new cabinet for my ladybird collection, as I have run out of room in my other one, Barry says anymore and we will have to add another room and build upstairs!!!
Can’t wait until next year only 23 weeks to go!!! (but who’s counting!!) Hope to see you then.”

Blessings to you, Mandy Grubbs ( my real name!) “

I LOVE the new website! It’s fabulous! So colourful, so cute and so easy to navigate. I’m a particular fan of the photo of Tinsel. What a grin! She’s a delight. I’m looking forward to keeping up to date with all things cute. Our bubbly ladybird just keeps bubbling. She is much loved. Always your ladyblog, Monica Edwards

Hi Claire, Butterfly Skye is the expert, and she will only have the creatures listed on her site that are ‘in season’ so to speak when you go to buy them. But spring/summer is good!
Twiggy our huge spiny stick insect is going strong, laying eggs and pooping alot! We love her! She has been in the Institute of Cute since last October. I know she won’t live forever, but there will be tears the day she comes to her end…hopefully not for a good while.
Let me know what critter you choose!
Jane
